LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy and Care in NYC
You've told the short version of your story in a lot of waiting rooms. Integrative Psych in Manhattan takes the whole story as clinical information, with one clinician handling your therapy and medication. LGBTQ+ affirming therapy is how we treat, not a separate track.

What LGBTQ+ Patients Experience
Most LGBTQ+ patients come in about something specific, and identity is the context around it rather than the presenting problem. Minority stress (the chronic strain of stigma, rejection, and vigilance) is the real clinical context that shapes how symptoms show up. You might recognize some of these:
These are clinical signals, not flaws in who you are. They point to real, treatable conditions, with a clinician who already understands the context they happen in.

Common Conditions We See
These frequently co-occur. The Sigmund Assessment maps the full picture first, so the plan targets what's actually driving it, not the loudest symptom.
Anxiety and depression
Anxiety and depression are the most common reasons LGBTQ+ patients book with us, and minority stress shapes how both present. Affirming framing means treating the condition while accounting for the environment producing it, not coping better with who you are. Learn more on our anxiety and depression pages.
Trauma and PTSD
Trauma in LGBTQ+ patients includes discrete events and the slower accumulation of identity-based stress: discrimination, rejection, and years of staying guarded. A clinician who recognizes that pattern treats the trauma accurately instead of missing it. See our trauma and PTSD page for how we approach it.
Relationship and family strain
Family rupture, differing levels of outness, and the strain of navigating acceptance gaps are clinical contexts we work with directly, individually or in couples therapy. We treat LGBTQ+ relationship work as its own context, including same-gender couples, partners navigating a transition, and consensual non-monogamous structures, not a variation on straight couples work.
How We Care for LGBTQ+ Patients
Every patient's care is informed by the Sigmund Assessment, a structured evaluation your clinician reviews before your first appointment. It maps your symptom history, what's worked and what hasn't, your relationships and environment, and your goals across seven clinical domains, with chosen name and pronouns carried through from the first field forward. Session one starts with a plan instead of paperwork.
From there, one clinician handles all of it: therapy, medication when it's indicated, and progress tracked with validated measures, so you can see what's changing rather than wonder. There's no prescriber-and-therapist split. We are not a gender-affirming medical provider and don't prescribe hormones, and we work collaboratively with the providers who do.
Our clinicians are trained in the minority-stress framework, and several hold a specific clinical focus on the LGBTQ+ community. The practice houses clinicians affiliated with the National Institutes of Health, Columbia University, and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and you can explore the research behind how we assess and treat. Care is available in person at our Manhattan office and by telehealth anywhere in New York State.
Assess
The Sigmund Assessment captures your symptoms, history, and goals before your first appointment, so your clinician already understands your case.
Match
We match you on clinical fit and your preferences, and if working with a clinician who shares your identity matters to you, mention it when you book and we'll factor it into the match.
Treat
One clinician coordinates medication, therapy, and lifestyle care, including sleep, exercise, and daily structure, from the start.
Track
Progress is tracked with validated measures, so you can see what's changing rather than wonder.
Clinicians who provide LGBTQ+ affirming care
Board-certified psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners. The practice houses clinicians affiliated with NIH, Columbia, and New York-Presbyterian.
Insurance and Billing
Integrative Psych is an out-of-network practice. You pay at the time of service and receive a monthly superbill to submit to your insurer for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many PPO plans reimburse a portion, and your insurer is the best source for what your plan covers. To check yours, call the number on your card and ask about out-of-network reimbursement for outpatient psychiatric evaluations, follow-up visits, and therapy.
