the basics

What men actually experience

Men's symptoms often don't match the textbook. They surface as irritability, risk-taking, and disengagement rather than tearfulness, so they get recognized late. One in five men will face a diagnosable condition, and most never get help. You might recognize some of these:

These are clinical signals, not character flaws. They point to real, treatable conditions, several of which show up differently in men than the textbook describes.

what we treat

Common conditions in men

These frequently co-occur. The Sigmund Assessment maps the full picture first, so the plan targets what's actually driving it, not the loudest symptom.

ADHD

ADHD in adult men rarely looks like the stereotype. It shows up as chronic procrastination, unfinished projects, emotional dysregulation under pressure, and working twice as hard for the same output. It gets dismissed as poor discipline, which adds shame to an already hard presentation. Accurate evaluation and targeted treatment change how you function day to day. See our ADHD treatment page.

Depression

Depression in men often presents as irritability rather than sadness, withdrawal rather than tearfulness, and overwork or risk-taking rather than paralysis. Because it doesn't match the stereotype, it goes unrecognized longer and erodes more career, relationships, and health before anyone names it. Accurate diagnosis and early treatment change that trajectory. See our depression treatment page.

Anxiety

For high-performing men, anxiety often passes as thoroughness for years before it becomes clearly disruptive. It shows up as physical tension, disrupted sleep, or relentless mental rehearsal before a meeting or a hard conversation. Evidence-based treatment, including CBT, produces measurable results on a realistic timeline. See our anxiety treatment page.

Burnout

Burnout builds in high-achievement fields like finance, law, tech, and medicine, where the expectation is to push through. By the time most men seek help, basic functioning has gotten hard. Treating it means addressing the occupational and lifestyle factors alongside the psychological ones: sleep, structure, meaning, and workload, together rather than one at a time.

How We Care for Men

Every patient's care is informed by the Sigmund Assessment, a structured evaluation your clinician reviews before your first appointment. It maps your symptom history, what's worked and what hasn't, your biology, your environment, and your goals, so session one starts with a plan instead of paperwork.

From there, one clinician handles all of it from the same chair: therapy, medication when it's indicated, and the lifestyle factors that decide how your brain actually runs, including sleep, exercise, and daily structure. There's no prescriber-and-therapist split and no indefinite, hands-off prescription management. Progress is tracked with validated measures, so you can see what's changing rather than wonder.

We match you on clinical fit and communication style, not the next open slot, which for many men means a clinician who is direct and structured and won't hedge every sentence. Male clinicians are available; mention it when you book and we'll factor it into your match. The practice houses clinicians affiliated with the National Institutes of Health, Columbia University, and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and you can explore the research behind how we assess and treat. Care is available in person at our Manhattan office and by telehealth anywhere in New York State.

Insurance and Billing

Integrative Psych is an out-of-network practice. You pay at the time of service and receive a monthly superbill to submit to your insurer for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many PPO plans reimburse a portion, and your insurer is the best source for what your plan covers. To check yours, call the number on your card and ask about out-of-network reimbursement for outpatient psychiatric evaluations, follow-up visits, and therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is men's mental health care different at Integrative Psych?

Not different clinically, different practically. We pay attention to how men communicate and what they respond to in a treatment relationship: goal-oriented sessions, direct feedback, a clinician who gets to the point. If past therapy felt unfocused or generic, the issue was usually the match, not the modality.

Yes. If working with a male clinician is a priority, mention it when you book and we'll factor it into matching. Matching is collaborative, so your preferences are part of the conversation from the start.

If you're functioning on the outside but something feels persistently off, or patterns like irritability, lost focus, flat mood, or unrestful sleep are shaping your days, an evaluation is a reasonable next step. The Sigmund Assessment maps the full picture before any treatment decision, so you get a clear read, not a label.

ADHD, depression, anxiety, and burnout are the most common presentations we see in men, and they frequently co-occur. Focus problems plus disrupted sleep could be ADHD, anxiety, or both. The Sigmund Assessment maps the full picture first, so the plan targets what's actually driving it, not the loudest symptom.
