Bipolar disorder is a mood condition marked by episodes of depression and periods of elevated mood (mania or hypomania). These shifts can impact energy, focus, sleep, and relationships.
There are two main types:
- Bipolar I involves at least one manic episode that may include impulsive behavior, racing thoughts, or decreased need for sleep.
- Bipolar II includes depressive episodes and less intense “highs” called hypomania. It’s often misdiagnosed as depression.
You might think:
“Some days I feel unstoppable. Other days, I can’t get out of bed.”
“I’m tired of the ups and downs. I just want to feel stable.”

Questions about Bipolar? We got you.
→ Is bipolar the same as borderline personality disorder (BPD)? No. Though they can look similar, they’re different diagnoses. Bipolar is a mood disorder with distinct episodes of depression and mania. BPD involves unstable self-image, intense emotions, and relationship difficulties. Our clinicians clarify and assess for both. Not in detail. EMDR lets your brain do the healing work without needing to retell every part of your trauma.
→ What is a manic episode, really? It’s more than just “feeling good” or having extra energy. Mania often includes racing thoughts, risky behavior, little need for sleep, or feeling invincible. If these symptoms disrupt daily life or lead to consequences, it could be a sign of bipolar disorder.
→ Can I have bipolar disorder if I’m not “up and down” all the time? Yes. Bipolar isn’t always constant mood swings. Many people go weeks, months, or even years between episodes. Some experience more depression than mania. That’s why thorough evaluation is key.
