Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy NYC

Mindfulness is an active, non-judgmental awareness of the present, as you recognize your thoughts and feelings. This philosophy is the core of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), which is designed to help you with chronic depression and sadness. By combining mindfulness practices and attitudes with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), MCBT will train you to develop healthier and more substantial ways to deal with your emotions. Ultimately, mindfulness-based therapy may feel less like a treatment, and more like self-care and a way of life.

What is Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy?

MCBT is a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness philosophy.

  • CBT focuses on the relationship between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and how they interact with and impact one another.
  • Mindfulness is an active, non-judgmental awareness of the present with observation of thoughts and feelings.

For many, depression is a recurrent problem. It’s not enough to just get well—you also want to stay well. Using mindfulness in depression treatment and therapy can improve depressive symptoms and help prevent relapse. Studies have validated MCBT as an effective treatment for reducing the risk of recurring depression.

Importantly, mindfulness-based therapy does not try to eliminate sadness from your life, or teach you how to not feel sad. Rather, MCBT trains you to develop a different relationship to sadness.

After time with mindfulness training, you can learn to react to sadness in a mindful way. Someone without training may react negatively and feel overwhelmed by their emotions. You, on the other hand, may be able to look at your feelings objectively, giving you space to respond and decide what happens next.

What happens during Mindfulness-Based Therapy?

There are three main goals in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

  1. Learning about depression

Understanding how depression works is important towards overcoming it. You will learn how your thoughts and feelings can impact your depressive symptoms, and why depression can feel so stubborn and difficult to deal with.

  1. Developing awareness of your emotions

During MCBT, you will gain a greater understanding of mindfulness, or awareness of your emotions. You will discover what emotional vulnerabilities you have, and what makes you prone to downward mood spirals.

  1. Equipping you with mindfulness skills

At this stage, you will have learned how to recognize your own thoughts and mood patterns. You will know how to view your emotions from a non-judgmental perspective, and use that state of mind to make more rational decisions about depression. Further, you will be able to prevent downward emotional spirals that can come from overthinking and fixating on negative thoughts and memories. Finally, you will be able to utilize the mindfulness philosophy by being present and appreciating the good in everyday life.
