What are Non-Stimulant Medications for ADHD?

Non-stimulant medications are an alternative treatment option for ADHD that work differently than stimulant medications. Some examples of non-stimulant medications for ADHD include:

1. Atomoxetine (Strattera): This medication is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that helps improve attention and reduce impulsivity and hyperactivity.

2. Guanfacine (Intuniv): This medication is an alpha-2adrenergic agonist that helps improve attention and reduce impulsivity and hyperactivity.

3. Clonidine (Kapvay): This medication is another alpha-2adrenergic agonist that is sometimes used to treat ADHD symptoms.

4. Buproprion (Well Butrin): This medication increases levels of dopamine, norepinemphine and serotonin in the brain.

Non-stimulant medications may be a good option for individuals who do not respond well to stimulant medications or who experience negative side effects from stimulant medications. However, nonstimulant medications may take longer to start working than stimulant medications and may not be as effective for some individuals. As with any medication, it's important to work closely with a healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment option for an individual's specific needs, when treating ADHD or ADD.
